The Renaissance — meaning 'rebirth' — emerged in Florence, Italy, during the 14th century and spread throughout Europe over the next 200 years. It marked a profound shift from the medieval worldview to one centered on human potential and classical antiquity.

Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael revolutionised painting and sculpture. Leonardo's anatomical studies bridged art and science; Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling remains one of history's most celebrated works.

The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 accelerated the spread of Renaissance ideas.
